V3 Success Stories

V3- Certified companies work with the Department of Veterans Services and other strategic partners to support Virginia’s Veterans.  One aspect of V3’s mission is to highlight brief stories about how V3-Certified companies overcame an obstacle(s) to support a Veteran employee. Their stories cover any aspect of their company’s recruiting, hiring, training, or re-training process that made their Veteran success story possible.

Meet the 2017 Phoenix Award Winner!

Bon Secours Virginia Health System’s mission is to be good help to those in need. We consider this our mission not only for our patients and the communities we serve, but also for our employees and their families. As part of this mission, we are committed to supporting the total military family: service men and women — active, Reserve, Guard, retired or veteran; military family members; and industries/ agencies that support the military mission.

The military has been a part of the recruitment diversity strategy in Bon Secours Virginia for many years. Bon Secours Virginia (BSV) was the first health system in VA to commit to the Virginia Values Veterans (V3) program. Since 2012, BSV committed to hiring 450 Veterans. Since that time, BSV has hired more than 600 Veterans.

Numerous organizations have recognized and honored Bon Secours for our support of veterans, including the Virginia Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve program’s Patriot Award and the Above and Beyond Award. In 2016, BSV was recognized as a VET Spotlight organization by the Families and Work Institute for our support of active duty military and veterans transitioning into the civilian workforce. We’re especially proud of the attention we’ve received for a special program offering a pathway from the military to civilian life for health care professionals.

Early in 2017, BSV hired its first veterans through the Military Medics and Corpsmen (MMAC) Program. MMAC, approved by the General Assembly and the only such program in the country, allows service members with specialized training an opportunity for employment and a pathway to licensure and long-term medical careers. BSV was one of the first health systems in the state to commit to the program and the first hire was James Tuppince, who served as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy for six years.

“Because of this program, I’m able to not only practice but continue to practice at the capacity I was in the military,” says James, who was BSV’s first MMAC hire. “I’m in school to be a dietitian, and I’m here getting that hands-on experience while I’m in school.” James now works at the Bon Secours Training Center medical practice, which helps him further his goal of practicing sports nutrition. In addition to the MMAC program, the health system offers training programs, confidential counseling services, the Stars & Stripes Employee Resource Group and other resources.

Our health system values veterans, who have learned teamwork, appreciation for diversity, discipline and adaptability from the military. Veterans help make our health system stronger, more nimble and more diverse and we are committed to hiring hundreds more over the next few years.
