The Virginia Values Veterans (V3) program held its first soft launch of the new V3 curriculum at ICF International in Fairfax on May 22nd, 2014. The Curriculum was developed collaboratively with the Virginia Department of Veterans Services (DVS), the Virginia Employment Commission (VEC), Team PD Systems, and feedback from many private-sector companies. The purpose of the event was to debut the new curriculum to a diverse audience of companies representing varying experience with Veteran recruiting and hiring.
Fifteen companies and 25 individual participants were present and benefited from approximately four hours worth of specialized and interactive training. The training included discovering the business case for hiring Veterans; best practices in recruiting, hiring, and retention of Veterans; and an interactive case study analysis within working groups. Participant feedback was enthusiastic! Consistent responses from the course evaluation indicate this training will impact organizations’ plans to reach Veteran candidates, and will help human resource staff members convince executives to build and/or endorse a Veteran hiring plan. The most valuable aspects of the training included all the resources and tools provided to attract, hire, and retain Veterans, information on how to build a business case for hiring Veterans, OJT/Apprenticeship opportunities, and the benefits of hiring Veterans to companies large and small. Overwhelmingly, the attendees felt the structure of new training, the guidebook provided to participants, and the administrative standards presented were excellent and solid steps forward for the V3 program.
