From Christina Lipin at Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), a member of the V3 Strategic Alliance Group (SAG):

Dear Veteran & Military Community Partners,

I am excited to announce that the grace period for veterans using the Military Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Skills Test Waiver (DL 13) has been extended to 1 year from the date of separation.

Virginia DMV was granted by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA) an exception from the mandated 90 day grace period. This was based in part on feedback from Troops to TrucksSM partners that identified the 90 day timeframe as too short for transitioning veterans to take advantage of the waiver program.

The Military CDL Skills Test Waiver allows service members to use the skills they obtained in the military to obtain the recognized civilian Commercial Drivers License (CDL). Since July 2012 the Virginia Troops to TrucksSM program has assisted over 300 service members in obtaining their CDL. New waiver forms will be available starting July 10, 2014.

Please help us get the word out about this new opportunity.

Troops to TrucksSM information and promotional materials are available. We have brochures, posters, and a limited number of DVDs. Please let me know if you need any of these items.

More information about Troops to TrucksSM can be found on our website at www.dmvNOW.com/T2T. Waiver story: http://www.dmv.virginia.gov/general/news/pressReleases/#/News_Article:8380.

It is our goal to assist qualified veterans in obtaining employment following discharge. Thank you in advance for your assistance in reaching even more veterans who may now qualify for the Troops to TrucksSM program.

Thank you,
Christina Lipin
